I met an old man today who reconnected me to my desire to provide excellence in everything that I do. As with anything in life we can become really busy doing things and if we don’t take the time to refresh our focus on our core beliefs and what we are really about we can get off track and begin to deliver what most everyone else does…I do a task so I can get paid.
This acquaintance of mine had installed a system, gutters to be exact, 20 years ago. We pulled them down to fix some things and replace it with our 6″ aluminum gutters. The thing that impressed me the most was the fact that these gutters were hand designed and installed. They were also installed straight, perfectly straight with homemade hangers and were there to stay. We had to work to get these things down and after twenty years there were no sagging going on, no falling apart. I was impressed and inspired. This is the kind of service and legacy I wish to leave behind.
I work on many different projects and get to see the end results of alot of work, some of it great, most not. It is easy to complain and point out the sloppy contractors and tell the world how I wish it would be. But I know there are many contractors and installers out there who are concerned about quality. Who will go the extra mile and lose a little money to make sure their customers are satisfied and have high quality products installed. I want to not worry so much about the sloppy people, but rather to associate more with the high quality people, to surround myself with these types of people and allow them to speak into my life, to shape the way I do business and conduct myself.
